COVID-19: General Press Release

CITY OF GREENWOOD

JULIE WILKIE, CITY MANAGER
BRANDON SMITH, MAYOR

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The City of Greenwood continues to monitor the spread of COVID-19. As most people are already
aware, the Governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, issued a directive on Sunday, March 15th
ordering all schools to suspend classes and urging people to refrain from participating in events
and situations that might increase the spread of the virus.

Our primary mission is to serve the citizens of Greenwood and those who visit our fair city. At this
time, to align with the Governor’s Executive Order related to education, we have made the
decision to suspend in-person services at all city buildings through March 31st. Barring any
additional directive, the intent will be to re-open City public buildings on April 1st. The following
will explain how the city departments will operate:

1. Municipal Court will be rescheduling all City Court proceedings for the next two (2) weeks.
Online payments will still be accepted, and judges will still set bonds for persons who are
arrested. Those affected directly should receive correspondence from the Court
Administrator’s Office.

2. A variety of City services can be paid online by visiting
https://cityofgreenwoodsc.governmentwindow.com/start.html. This includes building
permits, business license, hospitality/accommodations tax payments, court fines,
sanitation payments. Questions regarding online payment should be directed to the
appropriate department.

3. All emergency services (Fire, Police, EMS) will continue to answer calls for service. The Fire
Department is suspending fire safety and education programs. The Police Department will
not process fingerprints for non-criminal reasons, and no civilian ride alongs will be
permitted.

4. Public Works/Sanitation will continue to operate on a normal schedule.

5. Any requests for information can still be submitted to FOIA@gwdcity.com

6. City personnel will still be available to answer questions by phone during normal business
hours. A full list of phone numbers can be found at http://www.cityofgreenwoodsc.com,
or you can call (864) 942-8412 for assistance.

7. More information about COVID-19 can be found at
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/index.html.

We would like to encourage the citizens of Greenwood not to panic during these unprecedented
times. The decision to restrict public access and modify methods of operation is merely an attempt
to do our part to curtail the spread of this respiratory sickness. Please remember that everyone
plays a part in slowing this pandemic; remember to wash your hands with hot water and
antibacterial soap when possible, use hand sanitizers, and practice social distancing, especially if
you have any symptoms of illness. If you experience shortness of breath or chest pains, especially
if you have other medical conditions, call your healthcare provider for guidance on how to treat
your symptoms.
