The City of Greenwood has approximately 180 employees, both full and part time. The City offers a variety of administrative, public safety, technical, clerical, skilled, and general labor positions. All final candidates are required to pass both a pre-employment physical and drug test.


HORTICULTURALIST - Under general supervision;  plans, directs, coordinates, and monitors the care and maintenance of all City-owned parkways, right-of-ways, garden areas, fertilization, irrigation systems and pesticide application to enhance the beauty of the City and to preserve existing natural beauty. Plans, schedules and assigns work; instructs workers in correct methods and procedures; trains workers in safe operation of equipment; monitors and inspects work in progress to ensure continuity and timely completion of work. Reports to the Public Works Director. A High School education with three to five years of horticulture experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license. The City of Greenwood is an equal opportunity employer.

PERMIT TECHNICIAN – BUILDING INSPECTION DEPARTMENT - Under general supervision; performs a variety of clerical and specialized technical tasks associated with the zoning, building permit application, and plan review process in order to ensure effective and efficient office operations. Performs a variety of other routine clerical duties and provides assistance to the Building Official, coworkers, Joint City/County Planning Office staff, Joint City/County Engineer Office staff, and the general public as required. Ensures that International Building Code and International Residential Code guidelines, rules and regulations are adhered to along with departmental policies and procedures. Reports to the Building Official. 

Applicants must have a High School diploma or GED; an Associate’s degree preferred in business or related studies, with a minimum of 3 years experience in customer service and permit processing, or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job. Applicant must possess and maintain valid certification from the International Code Council as a Permit Technician. If this certification is not currently held, it must be obtained within one year of employment start date. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license. 

PLANS EXAMINER/BUILDING INSPECTOR- Plans Examiner/Building Inspector - Reviews plans for all new construction within the joint City/County of Greenwood Building Inspection Department to determine compliance with appropriate building codes.  Conducts field inspections of soils, foundations, framing, plumbing, heating, life safety provisions, fire suppression systems, light, ventilation and sanitary provisions for compliance with appropriate codes.  Preference of five years commercial electrical experience or minimum two years as a commercial electrical inspector; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must obtain International Code Council Plans Examiner Certification within one year of appointment to this position. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or GED, and have a valid SC Driver’s License.

The City of Greenwood is accepting applications for certified police officers.  Applicants who are currently certified by the SCCJA as Class 1 Law Enforcement Officers are eligible for a $1,500 hiring bonus, payable in three installments.  Salaries range from $30,784 to $38,542 depending on training and experience.  Additional benefits include health insurance, SC Police Officers Retirement, and educational incentive pay.  Applicants must successfully pass an oral interview process, drug test, medical exam, psychological screening, and background investigation.  For more information, please contact our Personnel Office at 864-942-8414,, or visit

UPTOWN MARKET MANAGER - Under general supervision; responsible for the coordination and operations of the Uptown Market and assistance with City events. Plans, develops, and implements the application process, guidelines, site plans, programs, and new ideas for the Uptown Market.    The job requires personal confidence and the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of people including municipal employees. Reports to the Assistant City Manager. A Bachelor’s degree in Parks, Recreation Management, Sports Management or Communication is preferred or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the job. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
