Business Licenses

After a public hearing, the Council of the City of Greenwood voted on December 18, 2023 to make changes to the Business License Ordinance in accordance with State law.  Over the last several years, the City of Greenwood has updated its Business License Ordinance to stay current with changes in regulations.  In September 2020, the South Carolina General Assembly passed the SC Business License Tax Standardization Act (Act 176).  These changes are reflected on your 2024 renewal.

The City is required to update its class schedule, recommended by the Municipal Association of SC and certified by the SC Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office (SC Code Sec 6-1-400(G), every odd year.  Going forward, the City of Greenwood will update its class schedule and you will see the change in your class schedule on your renewal form every other year. The renewal reflects your new rate code.

We hope that this letter satisfactorily explains the changes in the business license rates for 2024.  Please remember that your renewal is due by April 30.  If you have any questions, please contact our office at license@gwdcity.com or 864-942-8419 and we will be glad to assist you.

Effective January 1, 2022, all new business license applications must be received prior to 4:45 PM for the license to be issued the same day.

Every person engaged or intending to engage in any calling, business, occupation or profession or maintaining an office(s) within the city limits of Greenwood is required to pay a fee and obtain a business license. License fees are based upon the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes and the gross income earned. Download the City of Greenwood Business License Rate Schedule Here. Each annual license shall expire April 30th of the calendar year issued and is renewable without penalty from January 1st until April 30th of the following year unless stated otherwise. To obtain additional information on the City’s Business License call (864) 942-8419 or send an email to license@gwdcity.com.
