Greenwood is located in the Upper Savannah Region of Upstate South Carolina. Greenwood is one hour south of Greenville, SC and one hour north of Augusta, GA. Greenwood is the economic center of six surrounding counties - Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, and Saluda.

As of June 2007, the City limits of Greenwood cover 15.825 square miles. Over the last 5 years, the City limits have increased in land mass by14.88% due to an aggressive annexation program implemented by the City and the Greenwood Commissioners of Public Works (CPW).
