Let’s Discover Greenwood is looking for eager ambassadors to help promote the Emerald City to visitors.

This ambassador program began last year, funded through federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars. The goal was to provide the workforce with orientation and education on what there is to do in Greenwood, so when they encounter visitors they can share the county’s attractions to newcomers.

With about eight members attending each monthly session, last year’s Let’s Discover Greenwood attracted about 60 participants.

“Turns out our attendance was pretty diverse,” said Kelly McWhorter, Discover Greenwood executive director.

This year, without further ARPA funds, McWhorter said they’ll aim to do sessions every other month. This will free up Erin Nodine, director of sales and experiences, to schedule visits in the interim months with industries, restaurants and others, taking the ambassadors around to learn more about these businesses’ daily operations.

“I feel like we educate people who even grew up here, but weren’t aware of some things and histories in Hodges and Ware Shoals,” Nodine said.

“We can’t even cover all there is to do in those hours,” McWhorter said. “It’s more like an orientation process.”

Nodine said Discover Greenwood staff work hard to promote the area, but they don’t get to interact with all of its visitors. The Let’s Discover Greenwood ambassador program helps equip people who might interact with visitors with the knowledge to put Greenwood’s best foot forward.

While the ambassador program takes aim at advertising Greenwood to visitors, McWhorter said Discover Greenwood is already hard at work advertising its dining scene elsewhere. The “world of flavor” advertising campaign highlights the variety of tastes available in Greenwood’s culinary scene.

This year, McWhorter said they’re offering a $60 passport that provides diners with samples at the restaurants Kickers, The Olive Branch, Nagoya Japanese Steakhouse, El Centenario, Buenavista Latin Cafe and Sports Break. Discover Greenwood reimburses the restaurants, but the promotion encourages people to come to Greenwood and visit specific businesses, while the ambassador program promotes broader attractions.
